One outstanding high school golf career ended with a medal at the Class A State Golf Tournament while another medal performance set the table for a promising career.
Bellevue East freshman Greg Stanek fired a two-day total of 142 (72-70) to tie for fourth among individuals at Lincoln’s Pioneers Park Golf Course.
Older brother Kyle earned his second medal in his final state tourney, shooting a 145 (72-73) to tie for 11th.
The Stanek duo led the Chieftains to a ninth place finish in the team race with a 609 tally.
“The 301 on the first day was our best of the season,” coach Lance Raabe said. “We played very well this year and got out of an unbelievable district just to get here.”
Greg Stanek showed few nerves competing in his first state tournament. He shot an even par total and shot a 1-under score in the second round.
“Greg is a pretty seasoned freshman,” Raabe said. “He has played so much competitive golf and he’s a very carefree and relaxed kid. He doesn’t get uptight or nervous.”
Stanek was the only freshman to medal as seniors and juniors dominated the top 15 podium.
“When you look at the quality of players in this tournament and the scores that were posted, his performance becomes even more impressive,” Raabe said.
After a fifth-place finish a season ago at state, the elder Stanek concluded his career with a second medal.
“Kyle had a great year,” Raabe said. “He played so consistent throughout the season.”
Stanek’s classmate, Daniel McKernan, was going for the rare feat of being a four-time state medalist.
He was in contention after a 76 on the opening day but an 80 to close out the tournament left him in a tie for 49th.
“It’s hard to put into words what Kyle and Daniel have meant to this program,” Raabe said. “Bellevue East isn’t really viewed as an elite golf program and the talent those two brought to the team meant everything.”
Freshman Will Christensen shot a 166 to wrap up the scoring for the Chieftains while Kelen Severin ended his career with a 169.
